The Copping family of New Orleans had its beginnings on July 4, 1816 with the birth of William Copping to Christine Owens and Captain Thomas Tolver Copping. Williams would soon be joined by brothers Christopher and Tolver, and together the three would be the progenitors of today’s Copping descendants, the majority of whom—whatever name they now bear--live in the New Orleans area. On the Owens side of the family Copping descendants can trace their roots back to the earliest English settlers of both Jamestown, Virginia, and Plymouth, Massachusetts, where their sacrifice and effort helped insure the success of both colonies--whether laboring as humble indentured servants, or serving as business, military or legislative leaders. Copping ancestors not only interacted personally with many of the important historical personages of the two colonies, but often earned for themselves the historians’ attention in the chronicles of the times. Captain Copping was a late comer to the United States. He was drawn to the new nation’s opportunities in 1806 when a storm drove his crippled British merchant ship into safe harbor in Norfolk, Virginia. He not long after took up residence in New Orleans where he soon found himself in the employ of the U.S. government, serving as First Officer aboard a customs boat and exchanging fire with the men of Jean Lafitte and other pirates and privateers in the Gulf of Mexico. Later Thomas Copping became a river pilot and prosperous businessman before finally rising to the position of Deputy Harbor Master for the port of New Orleans, a position he held during the years of the port’s phenomenal growth.
